The Client

Established in 2018, the InsideOut Institute is Australia’s national research center for eating disorders. InsideOut’s mission is to “Transform the prevention, early intervention and treatment landscape for people with eating disorders in Australia and to find a cure through innovative research, collaboration and an enduring path of inquiry.” It is funded by federal and state governments, along with numerous philanthropic grants.

The InsideOut eClinic is a world-first eTherapy platform delivering evidence-based therapy for people with eating disorders around the world.

The Institute comprises a team of expert researchers, clinicians, and public policy-makers committed to ensuring every person with an eating disorder has access to the best possible care. InsideOut maintains a Treatment Services Database to help individuals connect with therapists, clinics, hospitals, and community programs. Their mission is further supported by a Learning Management System (LMS) which disseminates innovative training for health professionals in the identification, assessment, and treatment of people with eating disorders.

The team displayed long-term thinking about the infrastructure and had good time estimates and management.

Once we had an efficient way of working, Binary Studio team worked almost independently. They didn’t need to be micromanaged at all, and followed any communication or progress reporting requests we made perfectly and consistently.

InsideOut’s Objectives

The Client’s team came to us with a need for a veteran React and Node.JS specialist to modernize and expand their online platform. Later, they would add a second developer. One of their special considerations involved the nine-hour time zone disparity between Australia and Ukraine, limiting overlapping work hours. The developers for this project would need to self-organize on tasks with minimal supervision.

Overall, they aimed to achieve:

Expand and modernize features for eTherapy platform.

Broad-based efforts to improve the platform’s performance, ability for therapists to track patient progress, upgrade eCommerce capabilities, and similar refinements.

Solution and Outcome

Learning of InsideOut’s needs, together we identified all the technologies used in their existing platform and optimal upgrades for them. We were then able to match their criteria with one of our best React and Node.JS specialists with experience in eCommerce, AWS, and the strict nature of the development requirements for healthcare apps involving patient data.
As is customary with patient health data, our developers would not have access to the project’s existing IDE and production database containing real patient data. With access to the development database, an InsideOut eTherapy employee moved changes to production.

Upon successfully meeting InsideOut’s initial objectives, they asked us to add another developer. While development is ongoing, we were successful in meeting all three of the objectives set out for us:

Stage 1

Our developers refactored a substantial portion of the eTherapy project to conform with modern coding and React practices while also completing migrations to the newest versions of Mailguna and Hasura. Additional forms were added to help clinics to track and refer patients for automatic enrollment. The team improved communication speed from 3 seconds to 300 ms by adding WebSocket and implemented Onesignal to improve notifications delivery to 97%. Additionally, they created eCommerce services in Stripe.
Stage 2

During development, our team found and fixed over 20 security issues for the eTherapy platform and improved the Mean Time to Repair from 10 to 4 hours.
Stage 3

We devised the technical stack and overall design of the new InsideOut eLearning App with an emphasis on keeping it easy to manage and deploy. While development is ongoing, we completed development of its custom HTML editor, registration, and authorization forms. The team also integrated it with AWS S3 while implementing role-based access control.

Virtual therapy like InsideOut helps in offsetting healthcare costs which are on the rise globally, along with the prevalence of chronic diseases and disorders.
InsideOut shows how local governments, universities, and charitable foundations can team up to have a national impact. It’s estimated that 4%, or 1.2 million of Australia’s 25.7 million inhabitants, have eating disorders. The efforts of Sydney Local Health District and the University of Sydney, along with charitable organizations, however, have reached over 135,000 health professionals with their eLearning courses since 2018.
