Oliasoft is a global SaaS company that enables digitization and automation through sophisticated cloud engineering software for the energy industry. The company emphasizes collaboration, seamless data flow, and integration with in-house or third-party suppliers to create digital ecosystems tailored to meet specific needs.

Their unique approach combines expertise from the hard tech oil industry and the soft tech gaming industry to develop user-centric software that allows full automation and improves operational efficiencies.

The company's pioneering product, Oliasoft WellDesign™, was developed in collaboration with the Institute For Energy Technology and major oil companies like Equinor and Shell. It helps companies to catalvse seamless integration between existing systems and people, enabling automation, efficiency, and safety improvements in well design processes.

Oliasoft has successfully secured over NOK 110 million through private equity and grants. In a significant acknowledgment of their innovation and potential, the company was named ‘Most Promising Startup’ at the Rice Alliance Startup Awards in 2019.

Client’s Objectives

Oliasoft WellDesign is a fully integrated engineering platform, and it encompasses all the essential calculations for designing both onshore and offshore wells. It stands out in the oil and gas industry for its innovative cloud-based platform, accessible from any device and browser. This marks a significant shift from the traditional, desktop-based applications prevalent in the industry, which often fall short in providing the necessary data accessibility required in today's dynamic environment.

Oliasoft WellDesign’s cutting-edge technology and open APIs enable smooth integration within larger ecosystems and support machine-to-machine communication. The challenge, however, lies in managing the substantial volume of data, its varied formats, and ensuring compatibility across different systems. This requires tailored data mapping to align every data piece and parameter between software systems.

To address this challenge, Oliasoft turned to Binary Studio because of our strong Node.js skills, experience in handling large data volumes, and the culture of extreme product ownership. They already had a skilled team, including software experts and drilling engineers knowledgeable in math, physics, and 3D simulation. However, they were in need of a tech partner capable of quickly understanding the complex details of the oil and gas industry and working closely with them at a high level.

Solutions and Outcome

Our collaboration started with the involvement of one full stack engineer to handle the integration of Oliasoft WellDesign with software ecosystem of the international oil and gas company. Leading the team of software engineers, he managed to meet tight deadlines in the situation of varying requirements.
Oliasoft was impressed with the delivered results, and when a need to expand their another integration team emerged, they once again chose Binary Studio.

Stage 1

The main goal was to enable the engineers at the oil and gas company to effectively use Oliasoft WellDesign with their existing databases.
Oliasoft WellDesign comes with five modules that automate calculations and monitoring for the entire calculation chain, including trajectory and casing design, torque and drag calculations, fluid modeling, ECD estimation, tubing design, and blowout and kill simulations. These processes involve many different metrics and parameters, which can vary between software systems and even geolocations.
Smooth integration and seamless data flow require making sure all these parameters are compatible. We achieve this by carefully mapping data and adjusting Oliasoft’s existing solutions to match the client's system. Using the client’s system API, we download the existing well data and create datasets with drill parameters, saved as JSON objects.
Using the same principles, we also build a specialized API for Oliasoft WellDesign to align dataset creation and make future integrations with other companies' software easier.
Thanks to the effective management of the development process by the Binary Studio engineer, we succeeded in meeting the tight deadlines for the first stage of the software integration with one of the largest oil and gas companies. The project started with just one full-stack developer from the Binary Studio side. However, as the project's demands grew, the team was expanded to meet these increasing needs. Our engineer established a structured task management process and initiated daily meetings, ensuring that the project remained on track and transparent throughout.
Stage 2

Oliasoft continues enhancing software integration capabilities and has recently expanded its efforts to develop an integration service featuring a user-friendly interface.
To support this new phase, another full-stack developer from Binary Studio has joined the team. The project adheres to an agile development methodology, structured around bi-weekly sprints, and is guided by a project manager and a product owner at Oliasoft.
A key functionality of the integration service is enabling users to upload various file types, including drawings, images, PDFs, and more, from their current systems into Oliasoft WellDesign. This service is designed for API access and accommodates a wide range of file formats.
An important focus of this stage is optimizing migration to Oliasoft WellDesign. This is achieved through the integration of their own open-source UI framework. To efficiently manage large volumes of data, we have introduced data tree lazy loading, ensuring prompt loading and rendering.
Through this implementation, we've also made a valuable contribution to Oliasoft's open-source framework, which is available under MIT license for a broad community.
The service also features a microservice for user data storage, which is supported by a sophisticated parser that handles diverse data formats and normalizes parameter discrepancies.
At present, the integration service is in its initial stage, with substantial development and enhancement planned for the future. The upcoming work includes refining existing features, improving user experience, and extending the service’s integration and data management capacities.
The successful integration of our team into Oliasoft’s operations reflects our seamless collaboration and mutual drive for innovative problem-solving in a challenging environment.

Making an Impact

Oliasoft WellDesign stands out as a significant advancement in the oil and gas industry, marking a shift towards more sustainable and cost-effective practices. As suggested by McKinsey & Company, digitization in this sector could save up to $12 per barrel, a goal Oliasoft WellDesign is helping to achieve by integrating the full spectrum of well planning calculations into one platform. This innovation has attracted considerable attention worldwide, particularly in Norway and Europe, signaling a strong industry interest in digital solutions.
Beyond the oil sector, Oliasoft’s technology is also proving valuable in the geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage industries. Its ability to streamline planning and optimize well design contributes to more efficient and environmentally friendly operations.
