Established in 2015, Bunker is a US based venture-backed Insurtech company, technology platform, and licensed insurance broker. Bunker provides small businesses with instant insurance while also supporting leading staffing agencies and marketplaces with insurance compliance management. Bunker offers a SaaS solution with Smart Certificate of Insurance (COI) screening, compliance verification, monitoring, and on-demand insurance - all in one place.

Bunker is focused on simplifying, automating, and adding flexibility to the contract insurance process. Ordinarily, this process is riddled with complexities that make it difficult for companies and contractors to understand what they need or where to find it. Manual processing of waivers, exceptions, and contract negotiations also adds excessive overhead.

Bunker’s Objectives

Bunker’s web portal is the centerpiece of their effort to make it easier for companies to maintain compliance with their liability insurance requirements. They reached out to us to augment their development team to keep pace with user expectations. Their objectives centered on feature development and automation to improve self-service support and reduce administrative overhead.

Design and implement an event-driven notifications module to improve the insurance administration process.

Implement contracts management for bulk operations.

Simplify the process for users to request quotes, streamline questionnaires, and map all parameters to automatically generate insurance quotes while avoiding the creation of duplicate accounts.

Develop and seamlessly incorporate user-friendly tips and self-service features, allowing specific user tiers to efficiently manage Certificates of Insurance by accepting, modifying, or rejecting them.

Solution and Outcome

Already having a development team and well-defined technical stack, Bunker relied on us to augment their team with 3 engineers including the team lead, and 1 QA specialist. Our team supported technical stack migration to up-to-date technologies, including Angular 10 and .NET 6. Our engineers comprised specialists in NodeJS, Javascript, and Framework ExpressJS and would be actively involved with the integration of several third party services including AWS, SalesForce, SendGrid, Sentry, and Zendesk.

The team managed to reduce the delivery lead time by refining the software development process under our guidance. Also, while requirements constantly evolved, our team adapted to successfully deliver Bunker’s five objectives:

Stage 1

The Binary Studio team designed and implemented the event-driven notification module. This module provides users the ability to quickly respond to any of the insurance coverage insufficiencies or contract expirations. This provided users a quick way to track and review changes in status, insufficient coverages, and expirations.
Stage 2

We implemented support of bulk operations, such as the import and export of thousands of contractors at once, automatic generation of contracts, and COI certificates.
Stage 3

The team added an option in user profiles to subscribe to the Bunker Digest and receive emails based on their individual requirements.
Stage 4

Our engineers redesigned the Confirmation page and streamlined the components to enable users to request quotes, modify insuree data, and propose amendments for new and existing businesses on their accounts. To automate quotes, we integrated the Herald API to support quotes from multiple insurance carriers. New parameters were integrated into Zendesk, and Salesforce.
Stage 5

Our team implemented Self-Service capabilities so all new users could now accept or reject COIs, conduct independent reviews, change or add contract statuses, modify expiration and effective dates, and the like. Along with receiving tips for coverage, they could also preview certificates. Several new statuses were added to help users track the status of contractor compliance. Adjustments were integrated and new options added in Zendesk and Salesforce. These enhancements significantly improved and simplified the workflow for advisors, particularly when it came to overlapping insured parties.

Exceeding User Expectations

The delivery process improvements addressed above and implementation of several crucial business modules enabled Bunker to dramatically improve their customer’s satisfaction with Self-Service capabilities and ease of use. Bunker’s team noted that after observing the upgrades, several users who had expressed intentions to leave their platform decided to stay.
Where prior to 2021, many site reviews on Bunker averaged 3.5 of 5 stars, TrustPilot now reflects a 4.7/5-star rating with nearly 700 reviews. This is an incredible achievement given all the complexities surrounding insurance, underscored by what their users had to say:
